What We Collect
Information You Give Us
- Newsletter signups: If you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect your email address. See "Our Newsletter" below.
- Contact form: When you reach out through our contact page, we collect your name, email address, and message.
Information Collected Automatically
Like most websites, we use analytics tools to understand how visitors use our site. This helps us improve your experience. These tools may collect:
- Pages you visit and how long you spend on them
- Your general location (country/city level, not your exact address)
- What device and browser you use
- How you found us (search engine, direct visit, etc.)
We use Google Analytics (via Firebase) and PostHog for this purpose. These services use cookies—small text files stored on your device—to recognise returning visitors.
Our Newsletter
Our newsletter goes out about once a month, with new books, news and occasional offers. When you sign up we ask you to confirm your address by email, and we keep a record of how you subscribed: the wording you saw, the time, the IP address and browser used, and your browser's time zone. An unconfirmed signup is deleted after 14 days.
Measuring Opens and Clicks
Only if you agreed, we record whether you opened an issue and which links you clicked. This works through a small image in the email and through links that pass awstrack.me, a service of Amazon Web Services. We keep the browser description sent with an open or click for 90 days, never its IP address.
Each issue says at its foot whether it is measured for you, and links to a page that switches this on or off. Switching it off deletes your open and click records; totals already counted remain.
How Long We Keep Newsletter Data
- Unconfirmed signups: 14 days
- Delivery, open and click records: 24 months
- Technical logs of the mail service: 90 days
After you unsubscribe we delete your record within 60 days, or at once if you ask. We keep a scrambled form of your address, which cannot be turned back into the address, so that we never write to you again, and the record of your consent for three years.
Legal Basis
For readers in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland: we send the newsletter and measure opens and clicks on the basis of your consent. We keep the do-not-contact entry and the record of your consent on the basis of our legitimate interest in honouring your choice and being able to show it.
How We Use Your Information
- To respond to your inquiries when you contact us
- To send you our newsletter (only if you subscribed)
- To understand how people use our website so we can make it better
What We Don't Do
We do not sell your personal information. We never have and never will. Your data is not shared with advertisers or data brokers.
Third-Party Services
We use a few trusted services to run our website and send our email:
- Firebase (Google): Hosts our website, stores our data and provides analytics
- Amazon Web Services: Sends our email, including the newsletter, and measures opens and clicks for readers who agreed
- MailerLite: Has sent our newsletter so far and holds subscriber data until we have finished moving the newsletter in-house and closed that account
- PostHog: Helps us understand how visitors use our site
These services have their own privacy policies and store data on servers in the United States.
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Unsubscribe from our newsletter at any time using the link at the bottom of any email
- Switch measuring on or off using the link at the foot of any issue
- Request a copy of any personal data we hold about you
- Request a correction or deletion of your personal data
- Object to marketing at any time
- Opt out of analytics by using your browser's "Do Not Track" setting or installing a browser extension that blocks tracking
We answer requests within one month. You may also complain to your data protection authority.
